Athletic Training

Overview

Welcome to the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at Georgia Southern University (GSU). The Athletic Training major is an area of study that prepares students to enter the athletic training profession. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), this athletic training education program includes classroom, laboratory instruction and clinical experiences designed to prepare entry-level certified athletic trainers. Upon completion of this program of study students will be awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree and are eligible to apply for the Board of Certification national examination to become a BOC certified athletic trainer (ATC).

The ATEP is a three-year professional program focusing on the allied health profession of Athletic Training. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities. The program is highly competitive and selective therefore a limited number of students (approximately 10-15) are admitted annually. Meeting the criteria for application does not guarantee admission into the program.  Students are selected based on successful completion of all application requirements.

Applications are accepted during the spring semester each year, due on April 1st to the undergraduate athletic training education program director. Once admitted, student-majors begin six consecutive semesters of clinical and classroom coursework.  Through clinical coursework students will be exposed to a variety of clinical settings including; GSU athletic teams, GSU recreation and club athletic teams, area high school athletic teams, orthopedic surgeries, general medical illness clinic, radiology, emergency room and shadowing an orthopedic surgeon.
