Overview

The mission of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) is to promote the integration of knowledge in nutrition and food science and to develop leadership and critical thinking skills necessary for achievement of excellence in the profession of dietetics. The DPD at Georgia Southern University leads to Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nutrition and Food Science and was granted initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Chicago, IL 60606, (800)877–1600, ext: 5400.

The DPD curriculum is focused heavily in the basic sciences (chemistry, anatomy and physiology, mathematics, microbiology, and biochemistry). Professional coursework includes Professional Practice Strategies, Introductory Food Science, Human Nutrition, Life Cycle Nutrition, Meal Management, Advanced Food Science, Quantity Food Practicum, Community Nutrition, Metabolic Nutrition, Experimental Food Science, and Medical Nutrition Therapy. Excellent faculty and facilities and the presence of an on-going nutrition research agenda support the DPD. Completion of the degree requirements will prepare students to compete for an ADA accredited dietetic internship. Georgia Southern University graduates have a strong academic preparation and are recognized as leaders in the profession.
