Program Philosophy

The Child Development Laboratory, a component of the Child and Family Development Program in the Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Family and Consumer Sciences is directed by Dr. Alice H. Hall. In 1993, the program was accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. It has been re-accredited in 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2006.

The program is built on the understanding that all aspects of the child's growth and development are equally important. With play as the core of the curriculum, experiences emphasize learning as an active process. The organization of the curriculum in thematic cycles and projects helps to insure integration and continuity of the learning process. Teachers prepare the environment for children to construct knowledge through active exploration and interaction with other children, adults and developmentally appropriate materials. Learning experiences and materials are real, concrete and relevant to the lives of young children. The curriculum is infused with a multi-cultural, anti-bias perspective. Each child is respected as a unique individual with his or her own rate of development. Self-selection of actives and child involvement in planning engages the child's interest and encourages independence and collaboration with others. Teachers are facilitators and collaborators who work to create a community of learners. Parents and teachers work together to create positive learning experiences for children.
