Recreation
Program of Study
The Georgia Southern RTM program is one of only two accredited programs in the state, was the first accredited program in Georgia, and has been continuously accredited nationally since 1983. The RTM faculty bring a wealth of professional experience to the classroom and to the mentoring of students. Faculty members have held jobs as: parks and recreation director, city planner, outdoor adventure educator, commercial wilderness adventure guide/outfitter; certified recreation therapist, camp director, museum director, and recreation program planner.
Georgia Southern graduates have been very successful in both finding employment opportunities in RTM and in progressing in highly productive careers. Graduates of the University's RTM program include directors or superintendents of many regional, community and state parks throughout Georgia, marketing specialists or directors of tourism marketing organizations, the past commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources, the executive director of the Georgia Recreation and Park Association, and the past director of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites. The network of GSU graduates working throughout Georgia and the southeast in recreation and tourism industry careers provides a tremendous resource for job and internship placement.
By choosing a recreation, tourism, or therapeutic recreation career, students are choosing a rewarding, exciting, and fun profession that provides life-changing experiences. We fuel the human spirit, build healthier bodies, help children grow into adults, provide enriching experiences for adults, bring families and communities together, care for the natural and cultural environment and provide the basis for the economic growth of communities.
