Election History

In October of 2002, the Mu Kappa Chapter at-Large was officially notified by STT, that both universities were approved to become stand-alone chapters. In February of 2003, the Georgia Southern School of Nursing Mu Kappa Chapter-at-Large underwent the chartering ceremony to become a stand-alone Chapter known as the Mu Kappa Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Dr. Carol Picard, now president-elect of SII, served as chartering officer over the ceremony. Over 70 members attended the prestigious event. Since that time, the chapter has been very active. Over 140 individuals are currently active members in the chapter (2008).

The following officers served terms during the chapter’s transition to a stand-alone chapter:

President-elect - Donna Hodnicki, Ph,D, APRN,BC, F.A.A.N. (2002-2004)
Vice-president - Kathy Rushing, MSN (2001-2004)

Counselor - Marion Tabi, Ph.D (2001-2004)

  • Induction ceremonies for the stand-alone chapter Mu Kappa were held in 2002 and 2003. Pre-licensure and graduate nursing students, along with community leaders were inducted.

  • Membership meetings were conducted addressing business matters and educational offerings.

  • A highly successful Research Day was held in 2004 . Dr. Carol Murdaugh, Professor and Director of Research at the University of South Carolina was the keynote speaker. Her presentation focused on How to Establish a Research Program within an Institution.

  • Refreshment breaks were sponsored for nursing students during Finals week.

  • Drs. Elaine Hapshe and Donna Hodnicki participated in STT teleconferences involving Region 7. Also, Dr. Hodnicki attended the biennial STT conference in Toronto, Canada.

  • The first chapter election was held June of 2004. To stagger officer rotation off the Board of Directors, the Vice-president and Treasurer remained in their position until 2005.
