EAST GEORGIA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER SCHOLARSHIP LOAN:

East Georgia Regional Medical Center has established ten (10) scholarship loans for nursing students in their last two years of the nursing program.

These loans are $6,000 per student, payable at $1,500 per semester. Since it is a loan, the monies are paid in advance of each semester. The money can be used by the student for any financial needs, including living expenses. The student agrees to commit to EGRMC for a period of six (6) months’ full time employment for each $1,500 in scholarship loan received.

Interested students should contact Jim Reames, Director of Human Resources at EGRMC, at 912-486-1542 for further information.

SERVICE CANCELABLE LOAN (SCL):

If granted a SCL, you must work in the state of Georgia for 1 year per each year of receiving the SCL.

Scholarship and Financial Aid Opportunities

Important Facts for Financial Aid Recipients

Transient Students

If students have transient permission from Georgia Southern University’s Registrar's Office to take core courses at another institution, the Financial Aid Office can process a consortium agreement with the other school and process the student's financial aid. Students must be prepared to pay the fees up front and get reimbursed after the semester is over. The disbursement of financial aid for that semester is done after the grades have been received and posted in our Registrar's Office. Grades must be received within a reasonable time frame. If the funds are reconciled for the academic year (July 15th for HOPE, September 30th for federal aid) and the grades are received after that date, we can not disburse the aid. Note that UGA independent study allows students a full year to complete the course, but the student would have to complete it within the normal semester time frame in order to receive the financial aid.

Consequence of Changing from RN-MSN back to RN-BSN Status

Hope eligible RN-MSN students are allowed up to 150 semester scholarship hours while RN-BSN students are allowed 127 hours. If an RN-MSN student has received HOPE beyond 127 hours and then decides to complete the RN-BSN program rather than RN-MSN, the student will be required to refund HOPE monies beyond the 127 allotted hours.

FAQ’s:

What financial aid is available and who can apply?

The School of Nursing has several scholarships and a service cancelable loan (SCL) available to students formally admitted into any of the nursing programs: BSN, RN-BSN, MSN. Pre-nursing students are NOT eligible for these financial aid opportunities until formally admitted into the program.

Are there other scholarships available besides these on the website?

Throughout the year professional organizations and institutions may send information about scholarships they are currently offering. When received, information and copies of applications will be available in folders on the glass cases in the main office on the second floor of the nursing building. You should check periodically for new scholarship opportunities that have become available if you are interested.

How does the SCL work?

The SCL is a federal loan that is forgiven if you work for a period of time after graduation in an agency in Georgia that accepts federal funding (Medicare, Medicaid, etc.). The amount of employment time is relative to the number of years you received loan money during your program (1-3 years).

If you agree to future employment in Georgia, the SCL works like a scholarship in all aspects except for a small processing fee which is taken out of the loan award. If you have received other loans, please see your advisor in the Financial Aid Office to discuss monies & processing fees.

In order to be eligible for a SCL, you must have a completed FAFSA form. The link to completion of this form is www.FAFSA.ed.gov.

If I receive a SCL, how do I complete a promissory note?

Your agreement of future employment in Georgia is documented by signing a promissory note. A promissory note will be provided to you in person or by local mail by the scholarship chair no sooner than after the first two weeks of the semester. If you have previously signed any form of federal promissory note, you will not be provided with a duplicate. One promissory note on file with the government will suffice for all federal loan programs.

Should I apply for a SCL or a scholarship?

Federal loans are limited to $5500 per year per student. If you have other government loans that total near $5500, it is suggested you apply for a scholarship instead of a loan, given you meet the scholarship criteria.

If your GPA is near 3.0, it is suggested you be sure to include application for a SCL, as scholarships are based in part in GPA. GPAs near 3.0 may not be high enough to be competitive for some scholarships.

Why did I not receive money for my SCL? They reduced my other loans instead!

If you receive loans totaling more than $5500 for the academic year, the balance of the SCL over $5500 will be credited toward repayment of your other loans, instead of serving as additional funding. This is an advantage in the long run as you will not be required to pay the original total amount of your loans, but is a disadvantage in the short run as you will not receive the total amount of the SCL award in hand.

What are awards based on?

Scholarships are based on specific scholarship criteria outlined on the website and financial need. The data needed to meet these criteria is provided in the on-line application. Be sure to complete ALL areas of the application. Incomplete applications will not be considered as the data needed to make equitable awards will be incomplete.

Is there a difference in the amount awarded?

Given you meet the academic criteria for a scholarship, identical financial need criteria are used in determining the award amounts for SCL monies and scholarships. Therefore, the amounts of SCL monies and scholarships are relatively the same based on financial need.

What can I apply for?

You may apply for a SCL and as many of the scholarships as you choose at one time by checking the appropriate boxes on the on-line application. The application is universal. It is recommended that you apply for all sources for which you qualify. Please do NOT apply for a scholarship for which you do not meet criteria. In other words, do not simply check all the boxes.

Can I receive both a SCL and a scholarship?

Generally, you will not receive both a SCL and a scholarship. Determination will be given to which form of financial aid best fits your academic status and financial need, and awards will made accordingly.

How do I submit an application?

Simply complete all areas in the on-line application and hit ‘Submit’ at the end of the form. This process will enter your information for all the sources of funding that you indicated in the beginning of the application. Again, be sure to complete ALL areas of the application. Incomplete applications will not be considered as the data needed to make equitable awards will be incomplete.

When are applications due?

The on-line application is available during most of the spring semester. The deadline for application is near the end of spring semester and will be specifically noted on the scholarship website. Applications completed in the spring are for the entire following academic year.

How and when will I be notified of an award?

Letters of notification will be mailed to your permanent address during the summer months, most likely in mid-to-late July.

How and when will I receive my money?

The financial aid office will be informed of scholarship and financial aid recipients in the summer at the same time you receive your notification letter at your permanent address. If you have an outstanding balance when fees are due, the award amount will be credited to your account. If you have no outstanding balance or a balance less than your award, you will receive a refund check at your local mailing address (Landrum box) or home address (for local students without a Landrum box). This should be expected sometime after the second week of the semester.

Do I need to reapply for scholarships or SCLs every year?

Yes, receipt of a scholarship of SCL is for the current academic year ONLY. You need to resubmit an application each spring.

What if I am graduating mid-year?

If you are planning to graduate mid-year (December), go ahead and complete an application indicating you are a Senior II or are a RN-BSN or MSN student graduating in December. You will be considered for Fall semester financial aid.
