School of Nursing

Undergraduate Majors - Bachelor of Science

Dear Prospective Student:

We are very pleased to tell you about the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program at Georgia Southern University. All applicants must apply for admission to both the University and the School of Nursing. Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to the School of Nursing. Requirements for admission to the University and additional information may be found in the University General Catalog. Applications for admission to the University are obtained from the Office of Admissions, P. O. Box 8024, Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA 30460-8024, (912) 478-5391, or from the Office of Admissions webpage at: http://admissions.georgiasouthern.edu/

PROGRAM ADMISSION CRITERIA:

Admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program is competitive. Requirements for admission into the School of Nursing are based on requirements in place at the time of application to the BSN Program.

In order to be considered for the BSN Program for the Fall/Spring admission cycle, applicants must have met the following minimum requirements before the application deadlines of the first Friday in February for the Fall admission and the first Friday in August for the Spring admission:

Admission of the BSN Program has become increasingly competitive. In order to facilitate the Admission process, the School of Nursing is requesting that you include an unofficial copy of your college and/or university transcript(s) with the application for admission to the BSN Program.

Because admission to the BSN Program is competitive, meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the nursing major. Those applicants who, in the judgment of the nursing faculty, present the strongest academic record and who show the most promise of success in the nursing major will be accepted. In making comparisons between applicants, the nursing faculty evaluates the academic record of each applicant thoroughly, including an evaluation of science grades and cumulative grade point average.

Transfer applicants and applicants with degrees in other disciplines must meet the criteria for admission to the nursing major. Credit for transfer courses will be granted if course equivalency is determined. Faculty make course equivalency decisions based on a review of materials provided by the transfer student including course syllabi, a course description, and content outline.

Applicants must have met the following requirements before enrollment in NURS 3131:

  • Maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 beginning Spring 2007.
  • Earned a grade of “C” or better in Area A courses, Lab Sciences, Statistics, Anatomy and Physiology I & II with labs, Lifespan Human Growth and Development, and Microbiology;
  • Meet School of Nursing clinical course requirements, including: health history and physical examination; (b) essential performance standards for nursing practice; (c) immunization requirements including measles, rubella, and hepatitis B; (d) tuberculosis screening; (e) current American Heart Association CPR for Health Care Providers’ certification; (f) health professions student liability insurance; and (g) personal health insurance;
  • Participated in a School of Nursing Orientation session;
  • For applicants holding a current valid health profession’s license ( e.g. LPN, EMT, RT, RD), provided faculty with visualization of the license; and
  • Completed the Admission Assessment (A²) Exam

*These requirements are subject to revisions.

Please call (912) 478-5242 if you have questions or need additional information.
