Undergraduate Majors - Licensed Practical Nurse

Licensed Practical Nurses who wish to obtain their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree may do so in a full-time LPN-BSN Program. The BSN program at Georgia Southern University is approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing and accredited by the NLNAC and CCNE.

LPN-BSN PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS*:

1. Earned LPN from a program that is accredited in Georgia. In 1988, the Georgia Board of Technical and Adult Education developed Practical Nursing Standards to provide a technical nursing education which is consistent in Licensed Practical Nursing Programs across the state. A student who has graduated from a program outside of Georgia will be evaluated on an individual basis.

2. Current Georgia LPN license.

3. Evidence of active practice as an LPN student or practicing LPN for at least one of the last five years.

4. Completion of the National League for Nursing ACE Exam (Nursing Acceleration Challenge Exam LPN-RN: Foundations of Nursing) with a decision score of 75% or better.

PROGRAM ADMISSION CRITERIA:

Admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program is competitive. Requirements for admission into the School of Nursing are based on requirements in place at the time of application to the BSN Program.

In order to be considered for the BSN Program for the Fall/Spring admission cycle, applicants must have met the following minimum requirements before the application deadlines of the first Friday in February for the Fall admission and the first Friday in August for the Spring admission:

  • UPDATE AVAILABLE SOON

Admission of the BSN Program has become increasingly competitive. In order to facilitate the Admission process, the School of Nursing is requesting that you include an unofficial copy of your college and/or university transcript(s) with the application for admission to the BSN Program.

Because admission to the BSN Program is competitive, meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the nursing major. Those applicants who, in the judgment of the nursing faculty, present the strongest academic record and who show the most promise of success in the nursing major will be accepted. In making comparisons between applicants, the nursing faculty evaluates the academic record of each applicant thoroughly, including an evaluation of science grades and cumulative grade point average.

Transfer applicants and applicants with degrees in other disciplines must meet the criteria for admission to the nursing major. Credit for transfer courses will be granted if course equivalency is determined. Faculty make course equivalency decisions based on a review of materials provided by the transfer student including course syllabi, a course description, and content outline.

Applicants must have met the following requirements before enrollment in NURS 3131:

POLICY FOR CREDIT BY PROFICIENCY EXAMINATION

BSN Program

Eligibility

After admission to the School of Nursing, Licensed Practical Nurses may be eligible to take proficiency examinations for NURS 3131, 3231, and 3331. Permission is granted on an individual basis. Additional eligibility requirements include the following:

Procedure

A. The student who wishes to take a proficiency examination should request a meeting with the BSN program director to discuss eligibility. After a review of the student's education and background, the program director will refer the student to the lead teacher in the designated course that the student is eligible to challenge.

B. The lead teacher will discuss the testing procedure with the student and give the student the dates of the examination. It is expected that the student will buy the appropriate course syllabus from the bookstore and prepare for the scheduled examination. It is the student's responsibility to prepare for the examination.

C. Once a student has met with the program director and the lead teacher in the course to be challenged, the student may request to receive credit by examination. The student is referred to the Georgia Southern University Catalog and is advised to follow the procedure for securing proficiency examination credit as stated below:

1. Student must obtain a Proficiency Examination Form from the Registrar's Office and secure the approval of the appropriate program director.

2. The student must pay a fee for each test in the Cashier's Office prior to the test being ordered. A receipt will be issued which will allow the student to take the test.

3. If successful, the student will be awarded a grade of "K" showing credit by proficiency examination.

Course Specific Requirements:

A. For Nursing 3231: Pharmacology and Other Therapeutic Modalities the student will be given the opportunity to take a comprehensive examination. The student will have one opportunity to take the examination and must pass with a (minimum) score of 75% ("C") or better. If the student is unsuccessful in obtaining credit by examination, the student will be required to enroll in the course.

B. In Nursing 3131 Therapeutic Nursing Intervention: Health Promotion I, the student will be expected to take the National League for Nursing (NLN) "Nursing Acceleration Challenge Exam (ACE) I PN-RN: Foundations of Nursing" before the practicum proficiency examination is given. Successful completion of the NLN "Nursing Acceleration Challenge Exam (ACE) I PN-RN: Foundations of Nursing" with a minimum decision score of 75% or better entitles the student to take the practicum portion of the examination. The practicum exam for NURS 3331 is graded on a pass-fail basis and all safety criteria must be met with 100% accuracy in order to receive a passing grade. Students who do not satisfactorily complete NURS 3131 will not be eligible to challenge NURS 3331.

C. NURS 3331: Therapeutic Nursing Intervention: Practicum I: After successful completion of the Proficiency Examination for NURS 3131, the student is eligible to complete the Proficiency Examination for NURS 3331. The student will request an appointment with the lead teacher in NURS 3331 and follow the steps outlined above under Procedure.

Specific Requirements:

The proficiency test for NURS 3331 will consist of two components:

1. A skills test involving successful completion of a representative set of nursing skills as covered in NURS 3331; for example, these skills may include a Foley catheter insertion, medication administration, and patient transfer procedure. A skills check list may be found in the NURS 3331 syllabus and outlines of the recommended procedures may be obtained from the lead faculty member or designated faculty examiner.

2. The student will complete a nursing assessment on a client using the NURS 3331 assessment tool as a guide. The student will prepare a nursing care plan based on the assessment. The course textbook or other appropriate resources may be used in completing this assignment. The student will be evaluated using the Summative Clinical Evaluation Tool for NURS 3331 (see course syllabus).

3. The Practicum Proficiency Examination will be graded on a pass-fail basis and all safety criteria must be met with 100% accuracy in order to receive a passing grade. (The safety criteria are indicated on the Summative Clinical Evaluation Tool for NURS 3331 with an asterisk.)

4. The student should report to the clinical test site as arranged with the faculty examiner. The student should wear an appropriate nursing uniform, but should not wear a name badge indicating the student's professional credentials or affiliation.
