HTFCS Faculty Member accepted as Fulbright Specialist

Larry Stalcup

Dr. Larry Stalcup, Hotel and Restaurant Management Associate Professor, has been accepted as a Fulbright Specialist candidate. The Fulbright Specialists Program (FSP) promotes linkages between U.S. academics and professionals and their counterparts at universities abroad. The program is designed to award grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals, in select disciplines, to engage in short-term collaborative 2 to 6 week projects at higher education institutions in over 100 countries worldwide.

 

Sport Management Conference a Huge Success

The Georgia Southern Sport Management Conference was held on February 20-21 and continued its popularity within the sport-related industries. The Conference featured speakers from several differenct sport's backgrounds, including NFL, NCAA, and WNBA. The key note speaker was ESPN Radio's Erik Kuselias. The Sport Management Conference is an excellent networking tool for our Sport Management Majors. Executives from across the nation come to meet and greet potential sport management candidates.

 

Hall to speak at International Sport Symposium in Korea

The Korean Society for Sport Management (KSSM) is hosting an international sport symposium at Kyung Hee University just outside of Seoul, Korea. As such, representatives from around the world have been invited to speak about the current of the sport industry in their respective countries. Dr. Hall will be joined by representatives from Russia, China, and the UK. In addition to depicting the current status of the sport industry, including the impact of the economic struggles, Dr. Hall will be addressing some of the important issues in the sport landscape. H & K Collects for Food Bank

The Department of Health & Kinesiology recently completed their annual food drive for the Statesboro Food Bank. H & K collected over 1,500 items this year and timing could not of been better. The holiday season is always a difficult time of the year for the Statesboro Food Bank. The Food Bank is located at 108 Proctor Street just off of North College Street. Please remember those in need during the holidays. November 25, 2008

 

H & K Faculty Publish Reserach Article in IJ-SoTL

Three faculty members (Bridget Melton, Helen Graf and Joanne Chopak-Foss) in the Department of Health & Kinesiology have had a research article ("Achievement and Satisfaction in Blended Learning versus Traditional General Health Course Designs") accepted for publication in the January 2009 issue of the CET's International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (http://academics.georgiasouthern.edu/ijsotl/index.htm).  IJ-SoTL receives many submissions from around the world and has had an acceptance rate of 15-20% through its first four issues. Charity Fashion Show

The Georgia Southern University Fashion Presentation and Promotion Class is proud to present the Charity Fashion Show Saturday, October 25th. The fashion show will held at the Statesboro Courthouse from 4:00 - 6:00pm and will benefit Safe Haven women's shelter. A donation is requested for admission; women's clothing, children's clothing, hair care products, canned food items, Wal-Mart gift cards, etc. Come enjoy an afternoon of community support, an exciting fashion show and several guest speakers raising awareness of domestic violence.

 

Senior Companion Program Update

During the month of September, the Senior Companion Program had 47 volunteers serve 140 clients. The volunteers spent over 3,800 hours of their time giving in-home care to those in need. Let's send a big thank you to those volunteers who give up their time to spend with our elderly in need.

 

Wally Amos visits Child Development Center

Founder of Famous Amos Cookies, Wally Amos, took a few minutes out of his visit to Georgia Southern to read to the children in the Child Development Center. Most people go through life as if they were living out the movie Ground Hog Day. One day at a time, same thing every day, never breaking the cycle. Then there are those people who wake up every day with a mission to live out their dreams and to inspire others to connect with their potential. Wally Amos is one of those – a man with a mission. Welcome the First DNP Cohort

On the left is the first co-hort of doctoral students in the new Doctor in Nursing Practice program! They are 12 advanced practice nurses (all nurse practitioners) who will begin a 3 year program of study for the DNP. 10 of 12 are from Georgia. They provide primary care to a diverse array of underserved vulnerable populations.

 

Wolfe elected President-Elect of NTRS

Brent Wolfe

Dr. Brent Wolfe, Assistant Professor in Therapeutic Recreation in the College of Health and Human Sciences, was recently elected President-Elect of the National Therapeutic Recreation Society, and will serve a three year term on the Board of Directors.  The NTRS is a branch of the National Recreation and Park Association, and specializes in the provision of therapeutic recreation services for persons with disabilities in clinical facilities and in the community.  NTRS members include practitioners, administrators, educators, volunteers, students, and consumers. Recreation and Tourism Management Re-Accredited

Georgia Southern's Recreation and Tourism Management Program Bachelor of Science Degree was recently granted continuing accreditation through March 2013 by the National Recreation and Parks Association.  The Recreation program, housed in the College of Health and Human Sciences, was commended for the programs innovation, collegiality, and overall excellence and outstanding leadership sustained for an extended period of time.  The program at Georgia has been accredited continuously for 30 years, and was first accredited in 1983.  It was the first program in Georgia accredited, and is currently the largest program in Georgia.
